7 Tips for toilet training your dog

Quick Tips for Toilet Training Your Dog.

  1. Pick a command, such as “go poop!”, and use it everytime you direct your dog to poop.
  2. When your dog indicates his intention to pee, leash him, say the command, and bring him to the area you’ve designated as his toilet.
  3. Let him sniff around the area, he will pick a spot that he likes (and he will be more likely to use it again in future), praise and reward him generously when he poops in his spot.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 everyday for at least a month or more.
  5. Test the results – leash your dog when he indicates that he wants to poop. Say the command but do not guide him to the spot. Repeat the command until he understands what you want him to do.
  6. Take the leash and guide him there if he appears confused. Praise and reward him when he gets it right.
  7. Test the results without the leash. Say the command and let your dog find the spot. You may gesture to it so he understands what you want him to do.
  8. Be consistent in your methods; always use the same command and never scold or shout at your dog if he misses. Lots of praise and rewards will encourage positive behaviour faster.
